6 Benefits of Addiction Rehab Treatment
1. Learning Healthy Routines
When an addict arrives at rehab, they have lost all sense of routine. At an addiction rehab, they are taught healthy routines so that they can be functioning members of society. Drugs damage the body and soul, so it is vital that correct these issues for a successful recovery. With a healthy new routine such as exercise and healthy eating, the body is able to heal. With the correct daily routine and responsibilities, the soul can heal. The addict practices these healthy routines and is able to cope in recovery even when they leave the treatment center.
2. No Temptations
There are no drugs or alcohol available in rehab and this erases the temptation that comes with the disease of addiction early in recovery. We want our patients to be focused on recovery at all times and so it is vital that there are no temptations. An outpatient program may be the only option for some, but there is still the temptation of substance abuse outside the rehab facility. This is why an inpatient program is beneficial for a jump start into recovery.
3. Understanding Addiction
Not all addicts have the same triggers and understanding addiction is a complex task. For an addict to comprehend that they can never use again, they need to be educated on the disease of addiction and that recovery is a life long commitment. There is no magic wand that can cure addiction. Fortunately, there are tools that the addict gains in rehab for a successful recovery and life of sobriety – if they use them.
4. Understanding Addict Behavior
Addiction is not simply just an individual abusing a substance, it is deeper than that. Addiction doesn’t just happen out of the blue. There are certain negative thought patterns that occur triggers the urge to abuse a substance. We call this “stinking thinking”. Simply put, an addict in rehab cannot think for themselves in a positive way and with the right therapy, such thought patterns can change. Here are a few examples of addict behavior patterns:
• Impulsive and reckless behavior
• Self-gratification despite the negative consequences
• Rebelliousness
• Lack of responsibility or accountability
• Overboard mood swings
• Secretiveness
• Lies
• Lack of empathy
• Self-pity
• Resentment
• Isolation
• Self-harming and suicidal tendencies
• Victim mentality
• Unrealistic expectations
• Peter Pan syndrome
• Criminal behavior and lawsuits
• Financial trouble
• Manipulation
5. Making New Friends
The company we keep in recovery is vital for sobriety. In rehab, an addict will meet others that are on the same path and may even find they have similar stories. Not everyone will get along in rehab but there many who go on to support each other and new healthy relationships are formed. We do however not encourage romantic relationships early in recovery, and we have a strict rule about this at ARCA. The reason for waiting a year before dating is to protect your recovery and avoid relapse. As AA speaker Mickey Bush puts it;
“Relationship – Really extraordinary love affair turns into outrageous nightmare sobriety hangs in peril”
6. Understanding Triggers
Triggers are circumstances or emotions that can cause an addict in recovery to relapse. In rehab, the addict is made aware of what triggers them and what steps they can take to avoid relapse. Triggers that addicts experience, include:
• People – friends or family that abuse substances
• Places – clubs or pubs
• Dates – timelines that bring about bad memories eg. Death of a loved one
• Celebrations – new years day, Christmas and other holidays
• Emotional times – grieving, trauma, anxiety, and worry
• Medication – usually prescribed by a doctor for stress and has addictive qualities
• Events – a function where substances are readily available eg. Weddings and 21st birthday
parties.
